Tips to improve the imagery on your website
Product images are crucial when communicating product information to your customers. They catch people’s attention and help them understand your product’s size, material, and style, helping them visualise how they could use your items.
Sharing product images on social media can increase brand awareness. So, it’s important to feature products that customers would want to screenshot. Ensure your photos are eye-catching, sharp, truthful, and professional to reflect your business’s image.
Image Sizes
Consistency is essential to ensure that your website looks professional. If all your product images are different sizes it’ll look messy and confuse the viewer. Whatever decisions you make, such as image size, the layout (portrait or landscape), or even the background colour, try applying the same rules to every photo.
If the layout of your website requires smaller images or if your product is particularly detailed you could add a zoom feature so customers can view the item up close, as if they were picking up the product and examining it in real life.
We suggest using the following guidelines –
Size 800 x 800 (Square) or 1000 x 700 (Panoramic)
Resolution 72 dpi (if saving images for printing the resolution should be increased to 300 dpi)
We recommend storing your images in two separate files; one for website images and the other for images you want to use for printing. While saving the images, it is helpful to use the product code and name to make it easier to locate the image when needed.
Images can make or break a sale.
As more and more people are placing orders online, the quality of product images has become an important factor that can determine the success of your sales.
The better the quality of the image, the more likely someone will be to order your product. While many photography tricks can make products look better, it is crucial that the image accurately represents the product itself. Avoid the temptation to over-edit your photos by adjusting the contrast or adding coloured filters. You should ensure that the size, style, and colour of the image are consistent with real life, which is essential to building trust and loyalty and, in turn, strengthening your brand!
Labelling images and Alt Text
To improve your website’s ranking within search engines, use original images with descriptive file names and alt text. Labelling your images can help Google understand your website better and increase your online visibility.
Limit alt text to 125 characters if possible. Write Alt Text as if you’re describing the image over the phone and avoid redundant details such as copyright information and phrases such as “image of”.
